Before a long road trip: a checklist for the Nairobi–Mombasa road and beyond
Administrator
Long highway trips with heavy trucks, heat and long climbs show up any weakness in a car. Do these checks a few days before you leave, so there's time to fix anything you find.
The car
- Tyres: pressures (cold), tread depth, cuts or bulges on the sidewalls, and the spare. Make sure the jack and wheel spanner are in the car.
- Fluids: engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and washer water. If a service is due within the next 1,000 km, do it before you go.
- Brakes: they should feel firm, with no pulling or noise.
- Lights: headlights (high and low), indicators, brake lights and hazards.
- Wipers: replace them if they smear.
- Battery: clean, tight terminals and no slow cranking.
In the car
- Driving licence, insurance and any documents you may be asked for.
- Warning triangles, a torch, a first-aid kit and drinking water.
- A phone charger and the number of someone who can help in an emergency.
On the road
- Take a break every two hours or so.
- Avoid driving at night where you can.
- Keep a safe distance from heavy trucks and overtake only with a clear view.
- Watch the temperature gauge on long climbs.
