Toyota Land Cruiser 200 (V8 diesel): looking after the 1VD engine
Administrator
The 4.5 litre V8 diesel (1VD-FTV) is strong and long-lived when it gets clean fuel, clean air and clean oil. Most expensive failures we hear about begin with one of those three.
Fuel
- Replace the fuel filter every 20,000 km, and sooner if you often refuel at small stations upcountry.
- Drain the water separator whenever the warning light comes on, and check it at every service. Water in diesel damages the injectors and high-pressure pump.
- Fill up at busy, reputable stations where fuel is turned over quickly.
Air and oil
- Engine oil and filter every 5,000 km on dusty or rough roads, 10,000 km on tarmac, using the diesel grade in your manual.
- Check the air filter at every service and replace it when dirty. On safari and dusty roads, check it more often.
- Let the engine idle for a minute after a long, hard drive before switching off, so the turbochargers cool down.
Every 40,000 km or 2 years
- Front and rear differential and transfer case oil (more often after river crossings).
- Brake fluid.
- Inspect propeller shaft joints and grease points.
Keep the receipts, or better, record each service in CarLog. A Land Cruiser with a complete history is worth noticeably more at resale.
