Nissan X-Trail (T32) CVT care: avoiding the expensive repair
Administrator
The T32 X-Trail uses a CVT that does well with regular fluid changes and gentle driving, and badly without them. A gearbox replacement costs far more than a lifetime of fluid changes.
Keep it healthy
- Change the CVT fluid every 40,000 km, or sooner if you tow, carry heavy loads or drive mostly in traffic. Use Nissan's specified CVT fluid (NS-3 for most T32s); check your manual.
- Ask the garage to check the fluid level at the correct temperature. Overfilling and underfilling both cause problems.
- Accelerate smoothly. Flooring it from standstill, especially loaded or uphill, heats the CVT the most.
- Don't use it to tow beyond the rated limit in the manual.
Warning signs
- Whining that rises with speed.
- Shuddering or slipping when accelerating.
- The engine revving high while the car is slow to pick up speed.
- A warning light, or the car limiting power after a long climb (often overheating).
Any of these: have it diagnosed by a garage with the right scan tool early. Many problems are cheaper to fix when caught soon.
