Hybrid battery health: Toyota Aqua, Prius and Fielder Hybrid

Toyota hybrids are very economical in Nairobi traffic. The hybrid battery lasts many years if it stays cool and the car is used regularly.

Keep the battery cool

• The battery has a cooling air intake, usually beside or under the rear seat. Keep it clear of bags, seat covers and dust.
• The intake often has a small filter or mesh that clogs with dust and pet hair. Ask your garage to clean it and the cooling fan every 20,000 km, more often on dusty roads.
• Park in the shade when you can.

Warning signs

• The petrol engine starting and stopping much more often than before.
• Fuel consumption getting noticeably worse.
• The battery gauge swinging quickly between full and empty.
• A "Check hybrid system" message or warning light.

Before buying a used hybrid

Ask a garage with a hybrid-capable scan tool to check the battery's health and any stored fault codes. It's a small cost compared with replacing a battery.

Don't let a hybrid sit unused for weeks; a short drive every week or two keeps the 12 V and hybrid batteries in good shape.
